WHY SKI?
Ever stood on the top of a snow-clad mountain on a crisp sunny day and admired the view, then pushed off and had the most amazing ride to the bottom.
If that sounds appealing you can understand why so many people are hooked on skiing and snowboarding. The fresh air, the company, the physical feeling of skiing and most importantly the fun that can be had on a winters day in the mountain along with the sheer adrenalin rush all make a perfect winters holiday.
Like any sporting event though some thought needs to go into the preparation of the holiday. You need to be reasonably fit, and even then a bit of extra work on the legs never goes amiss. You need the right gear for the mountains, salopettes or ski pants and a warm waterproof jacket where the cuffs and bottom can be made tight, a pair of waterproof gloves or mitts, hat and either goggles or glasses and insurance. The skis or snowboard must be right for your ability and height and most importantly, the bindings on the skis must be properly adjusted. Boots should be very snug but not hurt and when that lot is organised then the fun can begin. O.k. perhaps not straight away, first you have to learn the basic skills and I won't kid you, that can be a tad painful, but the first time you experience the thrill of sliding down a piste and getting it right it is the most tremendous buzz.
